Syphilis is caused by a bacterium that was nicknamed “the great imitator” due to the fact that it often times mimics the symptoms of other sexually transmitted diseases.  In 2006, over 36,000 reports of syphilis was made.  Syphilis infects a person by direct contact with the sore.  The sores can be in the rectum, anus, vagina, genitals, lips or mouth.  There are many people who may have the disease for years with no symptoms.  It may start off as a rash, usually on the palms of hands and/or feet.  Some may have it for 10-20 years before symptoms develop.  Untreated syphilis can cause blindness, liver, brain and nerve damage or even death.

Syphilis is easily treated if caught during the early stages with in one year with antibiotics.  Even if you have had syphilis before, it is possible to be re-infected.  The best way to avoid an std, is to remain abstinent.  http://www.cdc.gov

On my last post, I told you all I would discuss why it seems like most of the std cases are within the African American community.  Even with Syphilis, African Americans are treated 3 times more, than Caucasians.    As an African American, I wanted to give this some additional thought.  Why is this the case?

Lil Wayne in the bed with multiple women

1. We have the highest number of single parent homes
2. Highest number of unemployment
3. The music we tend to listen to
4. The television programs we watch
I really want to address the music and television programs.  The music targeted at African Americans tell us that it’s okay to fornicate, have multiple partners “My girl got a girlfriend”, and being faithful to one mate is craziness.  The television shows targeted at African Americans says that men are hoes (and it’s okay) and women are only valuable for their bodies.  Take a look at most of the music videos by African American rappers.  It adds to the growing problem of std rates and no one is willing to take a stand.
I have never been one those ‘power to the people’, ‘black pride’ fist held high but I do not want to see my people die from sexually transmitted diseases.  There are many hate groups who are laughing at us as we kill off ourselves.  Time for a change.

Gonorrhea is a bacterium that grows in areas where plenty of moisture is present such as the uterus, cervix, and the urethra in males and females.  This sexually transmitted disease can grown in the eyes, anus, mouth and throat.  Each year in the United States it is estimated that Gonorrhea infects more than 700,000 people, but only 301,174 cases were reported.  Gonorrhea can be even be spread by mouth.  It can be transmitted without ejaculation.  Gonorrhea rates are the highest amongst teenagers, African Americans and young adults.  Untreated gonorrhea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and epididymitis.  Gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotics but it doesn’t fix any complications.  There is an antibiotic resistant strain of Gonorrhea.  The disease has evolved making it difficult to treat in some cases.

An infant born with gonorrhea

Some people may have been infected and not even know it.  The symptoms that do appear include discharge that may be white, yellow, or green and burning when urinating.  Men may have swollen and painful testicles.  For females, the symptoms are usually non existent  or very faint.  It may seen to be a bladder infection.

If you or some one you know are experiences these symptoms, please see your doctor or head over to your local health department.

On the next post, I am going to discuss why it seems like most of the std cases are in the African American community.  As a fellow African American, it’s quite disturbing.

Chlamydia Bacteria

As many of you already know, shortly after I lost my virginity, I caught Chlamydia from a guy who I thought was only messing with me.  I decided today to do some research on this particular disease.  I shocked to find out that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Chlamydia is the reported more than any other STD since 1994.  This particular STD infected eight times more African American men and women than Caucasians.  I was 18 years old at the time and currently for females between the ages of 15-19 year old, 3,329.3 out of 100,000 are infected.  The CDC suggests that women get an annual screening because the numbers are on the rise.  With medicine Chlamydia is curable, but if it is not caught it can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain.  This infection can also be passed to an infant during childbirth.

The church needs to stop covering up sexual sins and their consequences.  “The thief comes only but to steal, kill and destroy…”  John 10:10.  He is killing our youth, slowly picking them off one by one because the church won’t tell the members to stop having sex outside of marriage.  Pastors’ won’t tell husbands to stop cheating on their wives.  2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” NIV.  Too many Christians have itchy ear syndrome.  They only want to hear good lovely things, and not the truth.  But if “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32.  It’s time out for games.  Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge…”  Pastors, leaders, parents, the blood will be on your hands.
